Additional Criteria for Specific Industries

NOTE: The criteria suggest information which should be provided by entrants in specific industry groupings. Aspects of the criteria may not be relevant to all entrants in a grouping. The information provided under the following headings will assist entrants to select the most appropriate industry for their entry.

Communications and IT

Describe the impact of current or proposed government or regulatory policy changes which impact publication and broadcasting rights; cross-media ownership; spectrum management; scheduled free-to-air and cable or satellite programming and content provision; and issues of universal access and intellectual property.

  • Discuss the impacts of new technology such as: digital, cable, wireless and satellite television or radio; internet and high speed cabling and access; operations issues such as compatibility switch-over and transition strategies.

  • Define target markets as segmented by general demographic and psychographic factors and their uptake or adoption of new technology delivery systems.

  • Discuss any breaches of codes of practice or complaints that relate to your organisation.


Community and Welfare

  • Indicate the mission and objective of the organisation and whether this has changed in recent years.

  • indicate the types of services provided, statutory obligations and oversight.

  • the extent to which it engages in commercial activities and enterprises to supplement income.

  • Acknowledge the contribution of volunteers at all levels within the organisation, and the individual and corporate donors. The report should make a clear distinction between voluntary and paid positions.

  • Indicate fundraising policies and campaigns/appeals undertaken, including the revenue received and associated costs.

  • Provide details of internal controls for volunteer and paid personnel raising funds and allocating resources.

  • Discuss the extent of government co-funding of the organisation’s activities, including whether this co-funding has increased in proportion to overall fundraising income.

  • Comment on the percentage of funds spent on administration costs as opposed to in-the-field activities such as aid distribution.

  • Acknowledge the receipt of any government funding, or specific funding from other sources such as philanthropic trusts or foundations.

  • Outline any conditions which apply to contributions and how those conditions are met.

  • The five year summaries should include information on the number of clients or patients by service type or activity and by region. Charts, graphs or photographs should be utilised to illustrate this information.

  • Disclose any accreditations and government issued authorities or licences held and compliance with licensing requirements.

  • Include any reporting available to the public under fundraising regulations.

  • Include segment reporting that as a minimum looks at cost of raising funds, cost of administering operations and expenditure on the purpose for which the organisation is established.


Education and Research

Education

  • State number of students, subjects offered and pass/fail rates for domestic and overseas students.

  • Provide a break up of domestic and overseas students via area of study, and student success rates in gaining employment.

  • Provide details of staff/student ratios.

  • Provide details of issues contained in, or results of, domestic or international quality control audits.

  • Show the location of all onshore and offshore campuses.

  • Comment on the success and viability of any twinning programs with domestic or overseas institutions in monetary and non-monetary terms.

  • State institutional scores in domestic and international educational rankings.

  • Provide details of collaborative individual and institutional research projects and grants, conferences, seminars and technology transfers with external stakeholder bodies.

  • State the percentage of institutional funding through government subsidies and contributions as opposed to full-fee paying students, and changes to government funding criteria.

Research

  • Provide an overview of the research and development program in terms of scientific objectives and benefits to the community.

  • Subject to confidentiality considerations, state past year objectives of major research and development projects and report progress on achieving them. Identify any factors inhibiting progress. State objectives for the current year.

  • Detail collaborative arrangements with other organisations.

  • List papers published, patents applied for and conference presentations.

  • Comment on any significant ethical issues associated with the organisation's research, such as human embryonic stem cell research.


Financial Services

  • Indicate the current number of members/clients/policy holders and show movements over the last five years.

  • State major sources of income and profit (include both core and non-core business).

  • Explain how changes in government monetary and fiscal policy affect the organisation's policies, especially those relating to lending and borrowing.

  • Discuss interest rates and margins/overheads, over at least five years.

  • Explain the method of calculation of deferred income.

  • Provide a breakdown of receivables and investments into major categories of business in the review of operations and balance sheet.

  • Provide details and explain movements in specific and general provision for impaired assets, including the basis of calculation.

  • Comment on major changes in financial instruments, in particular exposure to changes in the value of hedges and positions.

  • Comment on financial services refinements proposals and their impact on compliance processes.

  • Outline the operations and performance of associated companies and their impact on the organisation.

  • Disclose movements in premiums over at least five years.

  • Outline the philosophy of the organisation and how policy holders/members benefit from participating.

  • Comment on service standards/benchmarks

  • Comment on consumer education on issues such as under-insurance.

  • Explain the basis of calculation for the provision for outstanding claims and unearned premiums.

  • Comment on any significant reinsurance issues, including actuarial comments, and changes which effect public liability.

  • Explain the impact of any unusual but substantial events that have resulted in significant spikes in claims and discuss the future impact of those events.


Health and Health & Medical Research

  • Acknowledge any government funding received and disclose any conditions that apply. State how these conditions were met.

  • List services or functions provided by the organisation.

  • Provide staffing levels and acknowledge the involvement of volunteers as a supplement to the efforts of paid staff.

  • Define which roles are voluntary and which are paid.

  • State the statutory basis on which the organisation conducts fundraising efforts and the organisation's fundraising policies.

  • Provide results of fundraising showing both the revenue received and the associated costs.

  • Acknowledge donors, supports, volunteers and indicate the benefits of their support.

  • List any specific or collaborative arrangements with university departments, individuals or academic researchers.

  • Include any reporting available to the public under fundraising regulations.

  • Include segment reporting that as a minimum looks at cost of raising funds, cost of administering operations and expenditure on the purpose for which the organisation is established.

Health

  • Details the numbers of patients, type of treatment and the cost per patient treated; number of beds, costs per bed per day, occupancy rates and length of stays; and number of cases by type (surgery, births etc.).

  • Describe any development projects or new technologies introduced, and their operational and patient benefits.

  • Detail hospital waiting lists for both non-elective and elective surgery.

Health & Medical Research

  • Provide an overview of the research and development program in terms of scientific objectives and benefits to the community.

  • Subject to confidentiality considerations, state past year objectives of major research and development projects and report progress on achieving them. Identify any factors inhibiting progress. State objectives for the current year.

  • Detail collaborative arrangements with other organisations.

  • List papers published, patents applied for and conference presentations.

  • Comment on any significant ethical issues associated with the organisation's research, such as human embryonic stem cell research.


Infrastructure, Logistics and Transport

  • Explain the effects of changes in government regulatory policies.

  • Present equipment details including owner/driver arrangements.

  • Comment on significant industrial relations issues, such as strikes, stop work meetings and secondary boycotts which affect organisational logistics.

  • Explain load factors and appropriate performance indicators.

  • Comment on the effects of changes in transport costs, in particular petroleum, liquified gas and oil.

  • List equipment financing, leasing and depreciation details.

  • Comment on accident and injury statistics over at least five years.

  • Detail passenger numbers showing movements over at least five years.

  • Detail major infrastructure breakdowns or significant delays in passenger services.

  • Detail the results of government and independent inquiries.


Manufacturing

  • State major sources of income (include both core and non-core business).

  • Explain the effects of government policies, including subsidies, tariffs and free-trade agreements.

  • State turnover by type of plant or business.

  • Number, size and location of plants, and any plants under construction.

  • Outline the operations and performance of associated companies and their impacts.

  • Detail developments in the manufacturing process, including new technology and processes, and the effect of government policies on tariffs and subsidies.

  • Details of participation in any emissions or carbon trading systems, including details of sales of emissions licences or purchases of emissions credits.


Primary Industry

  • Indicate production and sales amounts by products along with quotas.

  • Outline price trends in commodity markets.

  • Show livestock or primary product statistics.

  • Show livestock fatalities in export, including numbers and transport conditions.

  • Outline breaches of relevant state or federal regulations in relation to livestock export.

  • Indicate quality control and preventive measures for biological diseases and pests.

  • Detail location of properties and the basis of their valuation.

  • Explain seasonal conditions.


Professional Services and Trade Associations

  • Outline the role and scope of the organisation and identify key stakeholders.

  • State the services offered and how they serve the community.

  • Discuss any significant changes which affect professional indemnity or other forms of liability for the organisation.

  • Indicate links with other organisations or related or similar bodies and the community.

  • Comment on how the roles of various associated organisations are coordinated.

  • Comment on significant judicial or regulatory developments that impact on the organisation's operations.


Property and Construction

Property

  • Describe each major property, including rentable floor space, major tenants, lease periods, etc.

  • Comment on any borrowings policy, property yields and sector trends.

  • Outline any significant issues related to property re-zoning which may affect your organisation.

  • Detail any finance schemes, investment or retail, offered by the organisation to clients.

Construction

  • Explain the basis for the amount of interest capitalised.

  • Discuss work safety issues, accident and injury statistics and industrial training programs.

  • Detail long-term financing arrangements, including lease-backs.

  • Comment on work-in-hand.

  • Discuss industry and government awards for architecture and building design.

  • Outline any eco-efficiency initiatives such as sustainable building materials, water recycling, renewable energy and solar heating.

  • State policies for revenue and profit recognition.

  • Comment on any significant industrial action such as strikes, pickets and lockouts.

  • Detail foreign labour contracts and comment on measures taken to control illegal use of foreign labour on domestic industrial sites.


Public Administration

Local Government

  • Provide details of council and committee structures and number of meeting days attended by members.

  • Comment on council's major functions and operations, including roads, waste disposal and community services and how these are benchmarked for best practice.

  • Comment on community democratic governance arrangements, including elections, and community consultation and engagement.

  • Comment on the alignment, integrity and reliability of information systems producing internal reports to the council and external reports to the community and other stakeholders.

  • Comment on the state of physical infrastructure, capital expenditure, asset management and long term infrastructure needs and forecasts.

  • Comment on any national or state government investigations (including ombudsman) into local government activities.

  • Comment on any new legislation that has significantly affected the structure and operations of the council.

Legal, Regulatory & Administrative Organisations - State, Territory and National Legal

  • State the services offered and how they influence the legal system.

  • Discuss any significant changes which affect professional indemnity or other forms of liability for the organisation.

  • Indicate links with other legal organisations, government bodies and the community.

  • Comment on how the roles of various associated organisations are coordinated.

  • Comment on significant judicial or statutory developments that influence the organisation.

Regulatory and Administrative Organisations

  • Outline the role and scope of the organisation and identify key stakeholders.

  • Comment on the impact of legislation on the organisation's operations.

  • Given that regulatory and administrative units may not have a direct affect on their industries or organisations, describe how activities influence overall outcomes in the respective industry sector.


Recreation and Entertainment

Travel, including Tourism and Accommodation

  • Provide details of travel statistics, number and source of travelers and the category of their travel, eg meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE), visits to friends, relatives (VFR), holidays, short breaks etc.

  • Discuss target markets in terms of segments and regions, outline extenuating factors affecting the industry, such as exchange rates and projected trends, and the impact of environmental, social and economic factors.

  • Describe tourism campaigns conducted detailing strategies, timelines, costs and outcomes.

  • List accommodation venues, capacity and occupancy rates where appropriate.

Entertainment, including Sport

  • Outline target market segments and discuss market trends and projections.

  • Describe sponsorship and partnership elements, and campaigns and community programs in terms of their strategic intent and outcomes.

  • Discuss the impact of socio-political events on target market segments, steps taken to address corollaries, and indicate factors that affect other industries.

  • Detail the location, volume capacity and attendance details of each venue, including seasonal extenuating factors that affect venue performance.

  • Discuss volunteers and support groups where applicable.

Media, including the Arts

  • Describe the impact of current or proposed government or regulatory policy changes which impact publication and broadcasting rights; cross-media ownership; spectrum management; scheduled free-to-air and cable or satellite programming and content provision; and issues of universal access and intellectual property.

  • Discuss the impacts of new technology such as: digital, cable, wireless and satellite television or radio; internet and high speed cabling and access; operations issues such as compatibility switch-over and transition strategies.

  • Define target markets as segmented by general demographic and psycho-graphic factors and their uptake or adoption of new technology delivery systems.

Resources and Mining

Exploration

  • Differentiate between new fields and existing mine site exploration.

  • Provide significant results of, and total expenditure on, exploration in key segments and overall.

  • Identify major acquisitions or disposals of property interests under exploration.

  • Provide details of exploration activities, methods of sampling, type of drilling or testing, number of holes drilled, depth drilled, angle of drilling and width of spacing and results.

  • State the exploration funds available, where invested and amount committed to exploration programs.

  • Discuss the market for target materials.

  • State plans for exploration and for development of discoveries, including financing, extent of equity or other interest, cost and price assumptions.

  • Describe the past operating and exploration history of key properties and newly acquired properties.

  • Detail exploration costs incurred, those capitalised and those written off against profit, distinguishing between costs in Australia and overseas.

  • For exploration tenement interests, provide maps showing location supplemented by sections of significant exploration targets.

  • Provide details of any domestic or international territorial disputes over mineral or oil and gas reserves which effect the organisation.

Minerals and Petroleum

  • Report and differentiate between reserves (proved and probable) and resources (measured, indicated and inferred).Classifications should be provided including cut-off grade, commodity price assumptions, sensitivities and movements from prior periods.

  • Provide unit production costs and average selling prices on a consolidated and single mine basis. Production costs should include cash and non-cash costs reconciled to the profit and loss account.

  • Provide details of divisional or mine activities (actual and projected), production, ore tonnage, waste removed and grades mined and processed.

  • State the marketing position, including information on customers and contracts in place. Discuss the spot market and plans to sell product in the future.

  • Comment on hedging strategy and open positions. Provide reconciliation of prior years' positions to the current year position, and a calculation of average hedged performance compared with the spot market.

  • Identify major acquisitions or disposals.

  • Provide details and expenditure relating to the rehabilitation and restoration of seabeds, wetlands, mine site/pits and other areas of geological activity.

  • Provide details of health and safety performance in comparison to the industry average and across other industries.

  • Present data on emission levels, including discharges to air, land and sea of solid, liquid or gaseous wastes, and any ongoing litigation for environmental negligence.

  • Identify any third party external special and environmental audits being undertaken on the company/organisation.

  • Describe activities and programs, including royalty payments and other expenditures with localised indigenous peoples.


Retail

  • State major sources of income (include both core and non-core business).

  • Explain the effects of government policies, including subsidies, tariffs and free-trade agreements.

  • State turnover by type of outlet or business.

  • Number, size and location of outlets, and any outlets under construction.

  • Detail profit by non-retailing interests (including consumer credit operations).

  • Outline the operations and performance of associated companies and their impacts.

  • Explain the impact of competition including online competition and of competition policy.

  • Detail developments in the manufacturing process, including new technology and processes, and the effect of government policies on tariffs and subsidies.
